it was hurricane sandy, the need to spend on the home; whether it was the tragedy in connecticut, and took away the feel-good factor-- it was a confluence of events that led to a "should have been better" holiday season. >> reporter: a big part of the problem was in the densely populated northeast, where more than a fifth of country's retail sales take place. holiday spending priorities shifted after hurricane sandy as homeowners focused more on repairs than on gifts. also dragging down sales was uncertainty about the so-called fiscal cliff, tax hikes and spending cuts set to take effect next year. if lawmakers don't reach a deal to avoid it, consumers could see higher taxes eating into their paychecks. even online sales suffered. compared to past years of double-digit growth, this year, online holiday sales rose only about 8%, compared to nearly 16% last year. overall, holiday spending accounts for up to 30% of retailers' annual sales, so the disappointing season is a concern for an economy struggling to recover. >> consumers need to have more confidence. consumers need to feel that their jobs

for the victims im the newtown tragedy. 20 students and six adults were 20 studeen days ago at sandy aok elementary school. the shooting only stopped when the s first responders arrived and the gunman, adam lanza, committed suicide. elaine quijano sat down with some of the first police ijanoers on the scene. >> we were going as fast as we have ever driven, any of us. and we were running for that building. >> reporter: what did you see? what did you hear? >> i -- i could hear shots. ep reporter: officer michael mcgowan entered sandy hook elementary with sergeant david enllgren and officer liam seabrook. seabrook knocked out the glass on a locked rear door so the officers could get inside. >> we were moving down the hallway and we don't hea >>> the officer knocked out the glass at sandy hook so the other officers could get merchandise. >> we didn't see or hear anything. >> we could basically just smell gun powder. >> at what point did you realize what you were dealing with? >> immediately. once i got there i myself knew pretty much what was going on. we didn't have specific details yet. it

sandy victims didn't have a home, but thanks to volunteers some families are back home just in time for christmas. cbs reporter adrianna diaz has more. >> reporter: these twins are days from their first birthday and hours from their first christmas. who firsts, parents joe and jennifer were aparade they wouldn't celebrate at home. >> i didn't think it was possible. >> they bought their waterfront home a year ago but sandy ruined it. >> our walkway was two properties over, backwards, upside down. >> reporter: insurance isn't covering all the repairs and joe and jennifer drained their life savings trying to get pregnant. they lucked out with the twins, but that meant there was little left for the house. >> a volunteer 24 agency stepped in to help. they rebuild communities around the country in the wake of disasters. >> we figured if we could start with families like joe and jen lane and put them bark then the whole community will benefit. >> joe is a new york city police detective who spent months at the world trade center site. new york says they spent 50 to $60,000 rebuilding his ho

had been sick. joseph romer and his girlfriend sandy are accused of hiding the body and cashing thousands of dollars of pension checks. >>> pg&e crews have now found the source of a gas leak in brentwood. a group of neighbors stayed awake all night though after reporting a gas smell at about 6:15 yesterday. people evacuated three houses that showed elevated gas readings on the 600 block of allbrook drive. the source of the leak remained a mystery for hours. then just after 3:00 this morning, pg&e crews finally found the source. the leak was coming from a cracked cap on the underground plastic gas main. after controlling the gas flow, crews dug a hole to squeeze it off completely. they have since fixed the cap and repairs to the street are expected to be finished sometime during the noon hour. >>> president obama called congressional leaders before he left hawaii searching for a way to avoid the "fiscal cliff." danielle nottingham is in washington where it appears little progress is being made. >> reporter: president obama and the senate cut short their holiday vacations to work
